Ramsalt is a Norwegian adjective that originally means “very salty.” Historically, to ramsalt something referred to the process of preserving food—especially fish—by covering it with a large amount of salt. This was a common method for prolonging shelf life before refrigeration became available. In a figurative sense, the term is used to describe something powerful, direct, unfiltered, or marked by strong character. It can refer to language that is coarse and straight to the point, or to people and stories that are tough and unapologetic.
